Mary-Ann Cherry

RESEARCH TITLE: The Emotions of Violent Extremism

About Mary-Ann – Mary-Ann is a current part-time PhD candidate with a first class BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism from UCL. She has over 10 years experience working as a senior analyst in national and international law enforcement and defence with a focus on counter-terrorism and extremism. Mary-Ann also has expertise in structured and specialist analytical methods and techniques. Her particular area of interest is social psychology, and specifically the social psychological drivers of a violent extremist worldview. The goal is to use the insights gained from this research to inform the development of an effective approach to preventing extremist violence. Mary-Ann is the lead author in a chapter on the role of emotions in the radicalisation process (in press).

Research work – Mary-Ann presented a paper at the 2023 Conference on Emotions, Populism and Polarised Politics at the University of Helsinki, detailing the development of a psycholinguistic dictionary of contempt. The published paper is forthcoming.
